The bullion and the proof set coins issued from 1997-2008 and the 2006-2008 uncirculated coins offered four denominations to each kind. In 2009, only the one ounce denomination for proof sets was issued.

The US platinum coin mintage does not allow the platinum bullion coins to be sold directly to the public market just like with gold and silver coins. The US mint sells it to a network of already authorized buyers who are large scale dealers which already have a steady two way market. This means the buying and selling of the coins to the public market.

Although when the first series of platinum eagle coins began, the US platinum coin mintage wanted to sell proof sets of coins to the general public. Thus, bypassing coin dealers. Each denomination of this platinum eagle coin was for sale individually or as part as four piece coin proof set.

In 1997, the US platinum coin mintage marketed the special “Impression of Liberty” proof set which contained one ounce proof gold, silver and platinum Eagle coins. In 1998, the series of the changing reverse designs that were done annually were used for platinum eagle sets. By 2006 to 2008 the US platinum coin mintage was now offering uncirculated versions of the platinum eagle coins straight to the public.

Why is this kind of coin is so important for dealers and collectors alike? For one this American Platinum Eagle coin are the only bullion coins that are guaranteed by the US Government. They are guaranteed in terms of content, purity and weight.
